Physical modelling

Strike an object,
shape its body

Clang builds percussion from a bank of resonant modes rather than recorded samples. Every trigger excites a model made from several tuned and inharmonic partials, producing hits that feel physical but remain fully synthetic.

Three sound banks range from dark electronic percussion to membranes, cymbals, wood, stone and heavy industrial objects. Tune, Decay, Noise, Motion, Body and Tune Variation move each model from clean and focused to unstable, rough and metallic. Six dedicated CV inputs for Model, Sound, Tune, Decay, Noise and Motion turn a single trigger pattern into an evolving instrument.

For nerds and patient people

Why Clang exists

Tassman physical modelling synthesizer interface from Applied Acoustics Systems

Tassman from Applied Acoustics Systems was my first real encounter with physical modelling. The idea that I could hear a virtual object being struck or resonating fascinated me. That stayed with me long after those first experiments. Later, the expressive percussion of Intellijel Designs’ Plonk caught my ear too. When I started Clang, I wanted to explore that fascination for myself: sounds that suggest metal, wood, tension and impact, with controls I could play directly. Clang takes its own route, but those instruments helped me discover what I enjoy about this kind of sound.

Inside Clang

Clang uses a compact physical-modelling approach in which a trigger excites a resonant virtual object. Model changes the broad behaviour of that object, while Sound moves through its internal character. Tune defines the main resonant pitch and Decay controls how long energy remains in the model. Noise adds a less tonal excitation component for rougher, more percussive attacks.

Motion, Body and Tune Variation introduce movement without requiring a large modulation patch. Their ranges are designed to keep the result playable while allowing repeated triggers to develop into a less static voice. Clang is therefore not a sample player. Each hit is generated from the current state of the model, so small parameter changes affect the attack, resonance and decay as one connected sound.

Sound shaping

From trigger to resonant hit

  1. TriggerStrike the model

Send a gate or rhythmic trigger to excite the selected resonant object.

  2. ModelChoose the object

Move through different modal structures, from compact ticks to drums and metal.

  3. TuneSet the register

Transpose the full resonator bank for low impacts, tuned percussion or bright attacks.

  4. BodyShape the resonance

Balance damping, noise and motion to define the material and size of the object.

  5. VariationMake it less perfect

Add tuning variation and CV movement for organic, changing percussion.

Tips

  1. Choose the material firstSwitch between dark electronic percussion, physical instruments and heavy industrial objects before fine-tuning the hit.
  2. Separate object and characterUse Model to select the resonant structure, then turn Sound to explore different characters within that model.
  3. Add controlled movementSmall amounts of Motion and Tune Var make repeated triggers feel organic. Higher settings create unstable and metallic percussion.
  4. Animate with CVPatch modulation into Model, Sound, Tune, Decay, Noise and Motion to turn one trigger pattern into an evolving family of related hits.

Patch ideas

Metallic clockwork

Trigger Clang from a sparse React pattern and tune Model and Sound towards a bright metallic voice.

Organic percussion

Use lower Tune, longer Decay and subtle Noise for a loose wooden or membrane-like hit.

Modulated resonator

Sequence Tune Var and Motion while a steady trigger pattern turns Clang into a changing resonant line.

Use Clang in your setup

Submit Audio plugins are free to use in VCV Rack, a free modular synthesizer app for Mac, Windows and Linux. Install VCV Rack, then add the Submit Audio modules from the VCV Rack Library. To use them in Eurorack hardware, explore the 4ms MetaModule.

Support Submit Audio

If Clang added the right hit, consider giving Submit a little tap.

Every Submit Audio module is free and open source. If this one found a place in your patch, a small tip helps support future modules, testing and development.
